Show #664 - Route 66

This week on the show, Gary and Neil took a step back in time to explore the ultimate American road trip: the legendary Route 66.

Spanning nearly 4,000 kilometres across eight states—from the starting line in Chicago, Illinois, all the way to the iconic Santa Monica Pier in California—the Mother Road has spent a century defining the spirit of freedom and cross-country travel.

Our journey through classic Americana brought us face-to-face with some of the most famous landmarks along the highway:

  • Midwest Wonders: We kicked off the drive by visiting the towering Gemini Giant in Illinois before rolling into Missouri's mural-filled town of Cuba.

  • Texas Retro Art: In Texas, we highlighted the world-famous Cadillac Ranch, where ten half-buried cars serve as an ever-changing canvas of public graffiti art.

  • Southwest Icons: Moving west, we soaked up the glowing neon lights of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and stood on the famous, song-immortalised corner in Winslow, Arizona

No Route 66 road trip is complete without stepping into vintage service stations and historic eateries. We celebrated legendary roadside diners like Delgadillo’s Snow Cap in Seligman, Arizona, and Oklahoma’s famous Rock Café. These historic institutions continue to dish up a true taste of nostalgic Americana with their towering burgers, crispy fries, and thick, hand-spun milkshakes.

Whether you are a history buff, a classic car enthusiast, or a travel lover dreaming of your next getaway, Route 66 proves that the journey really is the destination.
