Show #663 - Sunrise & Sunset

Hosted as always by Gary with Neil, this week's show chased the world's best sunrises and sunsets, focusing on alignments of season, weather and light.

Neil opened in Yosemite Valley in mid-February, where Horsetail Fall drops 640 metres off El Capitan and glows orange around 5:30pm when clear western light hits it, the Firefall.

He explained the Green Flash, a one to two second emerald rim as the sun sinks over a flat, clear ocean horizon, best sought in Key West, the Pacific and Santorini. At 3,055 metres, Haleakalā on Maui requires a pre-dawn reservation to watch sunrise above the cloud deck in near-freezing cold.

Equinox sunrise aligns over Angkor Wat's central tower, while October to March brings dawn balloon flights over Bagan's 2,000 temples.

First light transforms the Taj Mahal's white Makrana marble from grey to gold, Uluru's iron-rich arkose from ochre to crimson, Salar de Uyuni's wet-season water into a perfect mirror, the Grand Canyon's layers from Vishnu basement to Kaibab limestone, and Iceland's Reynisfjara black beach into prolonged summer gold or winter violet.

The show closed close to Neil’s home, high up on Tamborine Mountain's Hang Glider Launch on Main Western Road, 525 metres above Canungra Valley, looking to the Scenic Rim.

NEXT WEEK - From flickering hallway lights to midnight whispers, we discover hotels around the world that hide real ghost stories that might make you sleep with lights on…..
